Day Scholar Class Action Suit – Update on September 27th at shíshálh Nation Hall, 5 p.m.

By Selina August
I have been attending our executive meetings for the Day Scholar Class Action Suit along with Councillor Alvina Paul and our legal team, continuing the fight for justice for our survivors.

As an executive team we have monthly meetings and have also had Case Management Conferences with Judge Harrington, who is mediating our Class Action suit in the hopes of reaching a settlement without having to go to trial.

Canada originally appointed Minister Carolyn Bennett and a Ministerial Special Representative Tom Isaac, for the “Exploratory Discussions” phase which commenced more than a year and half ago.  More recently, Department of Justice, Legal Negotiators were appointed to the file.  This transition seems to have delayed our progress moving forward.  We have asked our Legal Representative Peter Grant from Grant Huberman (formally Peter Grant and Associates) to visit our community to provide a detailed update to the community.  We are hoping to hold this meeting in early September.  Once a date has been selected a notice will go out to the community; we want to ensure that everyone is well informed of this meeting date.

To avoid misinformation, I need to let everyone know that no decision has been made regarding the Day Scholar Class Action Suit and that we are still in negotiations.

Please attend a Community Meeting on September 27th to get an update on the Day Scholar Class Action.
