About Housing Department

The Sechelt Band Housing Authority was established in 1980 by Declaration of Trust and operates within the shíshálh Band Administration. The current elected Trustees are Corey August, Selina August, Frank Dixon Sr., Janis Joe, and Carol Louie. Their term of office continues to February 29, 2015. The Trustees administer the program for all Band member homes on Sechelt Band Lands in accordance with policy and within a budget approved by the Council. Trustees continue to work on arrears collection in order to increase funds available for renovations and construction.

The Housing Director, Lynne Quinn assists by implementing the decisions of the Trustees and managing daily operations including documentation for applications and allocations, repairs, appliance purchases, construction and renovation financing. The Housing Clerk, Amber Dixon assists the Director with daily operations. Our bookkeeping is done under the direction of our new accountant, Andy Pelletier. Housing staff act as liaison for Band members, Trustees, Council, inspectors, contractors, suppliers, repairmen, and funding sources (CMHC, INAC, RBC).

Band members 19 years of age or more are eligible to apply for Housing on Band lands: There are currently 168 names on our Housing Applicant´s list. Trustees and staff are working on prioritizing requests for major repairs and minor renovations. Written letters of application for Housing repair/renovation loans are accepted for review throughout the year. Staff also assist members with applications for the CMHC 'on-reserve RRAP' program (Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program) and HASI (Home Adaptations for Seniors Independance Program).

Our continued focus for 2014/15 is to make arrangements with Band members or finalize legal actions to bring the rent and mortgage arrears down. Mortgage and rental agreements are being updated for implementation in the new fiscal year. The new mortgage documents will be used for the reduction in mortgage rates effective April 1, 2014 as approved by Council in 2013. We have changed to a new software program for our financial records to provide monthly statements to assist Band members in their personal budgeting for housing. Trustees and staff will continue with Housing Strategy Development in the new year along with Housing Policy amendment.
